Discover inner space by creating intervals in the flow of thoughts. Without these intervals, your thinking becomes repetitive, uninspired, devoid of any creative spark, as it is still for the most people on the planet.
You do not need to worry about the duration of these intervals, a few seconds will do. Gradually increase alone, without any effort on your part. More important is that their length make it happen frequently, so that your daily activities and the flow of your thoughts to alternate space.
Recently someone showed me the annual program of a large spiritual organization. As I examined, I was impressed by the wide range of interesting seminars and workshops. It reminded me of a smorgasbord, one of those Scandinavian buffet where you can choose from a huge variety of foods in abundance. That person asked me if I could recommend one or two. "I do not know," I said. "These seminars will all seem very interesting. "But one thing I know for sure," I said. "Stay aware of your breathing as often as you can, whenever you remember. Do this for a year and this produce a transformation more powerful than the participation in these courses. It does not cost anything. "
Be aware of breathing shifts the focus from thinking and creates space. It is a way to generate awareness. Although the fullness of consciousness already exists in a non-manifested, we are here to bring consciousness into this dimension.
Be aware of the breath. Pay attention to the sensation of the breath. Feel the air that enters and leaves the body. Notice how the chest and abdomen expand and contract slightly with inhalation and exhalation. One conscious breath is enough to create space where before there was a succession interrupted one thought after another. One conscious breath, two or three would be even better, many times a day, is an excellent way to bring space into your life.
Even if you meditate on your breathing for two hours or more, as some have done, one breath is all you need to be aware or rather, everything that you can be aware. The rest is memory or anticipation, that thought.
Breathing is not really something you do, but something that can be observed as it happens. Breathing happens all by itself. It is the internal intelligence of the body that does. All you have to do is watch it as it happens. It does not involve any effort or tension. Be careful, also, the brief pause in breathing, especially at the point of stillness at the end of exhalation, before the beginning of a new inspiration.
In many people, the breath is unnaturally shallow. The more you are aware of the breath, the more it will regain its natural depth. For the breath itself has no form, it has been assumed since antiquity to the spirit, not the only life form. "Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, so man became a living being."
The word breath in German, atmen, derives from the word Indian (Sanskrit) Atman, whose meaning is innate or God's divine spirit within us.
The fact that the breath has no form is one of the reasons why the awareness of the breath is an extremely effective way of bringing space into your life, to generate awareness. It is an excellent object of meditation because it is not an object, has no structure or form. The other reason is that the breath is one of the phenomena more subtle and seemingly insignificant. "The smallest thing", according to Nietzsche, creates "the greatest happiness."
Drill or less awareness of breathing as a form of meditation itself is your choice. Meditation practiced regularly, however, is not a substitute for bringing awareness of space in everyday life.
Be aware of your breathing forces you to stay in the present moment, which is the key to all inner transformation. Whenever you are aware of the breath, you are absolutely present. You also realize that you can not think, at the same time, be aware of your breathing. The breath stops the conscious mind. But far from being half asleep or in trance, you are fully awake and fully alert. You're not falling below the thought, but there was high above it. And if you look more closely you will find that these two things, to get fully in the present and stop thinking without losing consciousness, are actually one and the same thing, the emergence of consciousness in space.
